The Emotional Side of Decluttering

Letting Go of Sentimental Items

Decluttering isn’t just about making space; it’s about letting go. And for many people, that’s really hard to do. So many people have friends or family members who struggle to let go of sentimental items. But over time, these items can pile up. So, what do you do when those items start to overwhelm both the physical spaces and the mental spaces of the ones you love most?

Your concerns are valid, and you’re not alone. Let’s talk about how you can best support your loved ones through the emotional side of decluttering.

Why Letting Go Can Be Liberating

Whether it’s a gift from a loved one or an item that brings them back to a special moment in their childhood, sentimental items are nice to have around. But too much clutter can cloud both their space and their mind. Although it can sometimes be a painful process, decluttering is a great way to hit the “reset” button. And while it may feel this way, decluttering isn’t about discarding history; it’s about creating room for the present and future.

The First Steps to Helping Someone Let Go

Start Small
Encourage them to start with a small group of items, like an old box of cards or a drawer full of knick-knacks. Starting small can help ease the emotional weight of the process, and once they begin, it often feels easier to keep going.

Sort by Category
Rather than diving into everything at once, help them focus on specific types of sentimental items. This could be letters, photographs, or childhood memorabilia. By concentrating on one category, they can make more thoughtful decisions.

Keep a Few Things
Decluttering doesn’t mean getting rid of everything; it’s okay to keep a few special things! Before they decide what to keep, ask them to reflect: “Does this item still bring you joy?” If it’s an object they don’t need, use, or truly cherish, it’s okay to let it go.

Take Photos
If they’re having a hard time parting with certain items, suggest taking pictures of them. This way, they can keep a visual memory without the physical clutter. They’ll be able to look back at these items whenever they want, without taking up space in their home.

Donate or Repurpose
Sometimes, knowing that sentimental items can be put to good use helps ease the pain of letting them go. Encourage them to donate items to someone who might benefit from them or repurpose them into something new. This gives the items a second life, even after they’ve left their hands.
