Tax season just wrapped — and if you’re anything like us, that means a stack of “I’ll deal with this later” paperwork is staring you down from the corner of your home office, the kitchen counter, or that one chair in the bedroom.
Old bank statements.
Outdated medical records.
Expired insurance paperwork.
Years of tax returns you’re finally allowed to let go of.
The paper pile struggle is REAL.
(We get it — our homes have been there, too.)
You know you can’t just toss those papers in the recycling bin. Anything with your name, account numbers, or Social Security digits needs to be shredded — not recycled. But paying for shredding services adds up, and an at-home shredder can barely make it through half a banker’s box before it overheats.
The good news? Colorado Springs has seven FREE community shred events scheduled for 2026.
We’ve rounded them up below so you can plan ahead, pick the one closest to you, and finally clear out that paper clutter for good.

A few notes before you start loading the car:

If you miss one of these events, have more paper than a free event can take, or just can’t wait for the next date on the calendar — we’ve got you.
Our go-to in Colorado Springs is Vital Records Control (2784 Steel Dr, 80907 | 719-227-0877). Open 8 AM – 3 PM, Monday through Friday. They’re the cheapest place we’ve found in town for volume shredding — they charge by the pound, and the shredding is secure (they can even do it onsite or offsite).
You can find more shredding, recycling, and disposal options in our 2026 Springs Disposal + Recycle Guide.
Scan, don’t read. The #1 reason paper-sorting takes forever? We stop to actually read every document. Your job right now isn’t to reminisce — it’s to decide: keep, shred, or recycle. Ten seconds per page, max. If a document takes longer than that, put it in a decide later pile. (If you want to know how long to keep tax records, The IRS has guidance here.)
Staples and paperclips are usually fine. But cardboard, binders, CDs, and hanging file folders are usually a no. Double-check the event’s rules above before you pack.
Arrive early. Lines can wrap around the parking lot, especially right after tax season.
Take a neighbor’s box, too. Many of these events don’t require the paper’s owner to be the one dropping it off. If you have an elderly neighbor or relative who’d love to offload a box, offer to take it along.
Here’s the truth: if the paper keeps finding its way back to the same pile, it’s not a willpower problem. It’s a systems problem.
A single banker’s box can fit up to 2,500 sheets of paper. It’s no wonder sorting through a pile of mail feels like climbing a mountain.
We walk through our three favorite paper-taming tips — declutter, choose a storage system, and label everything — in Simple Paper Filing Systems. Give it a read before your next shred event, and this time next year you’ll be shredding a much smaller box.
We get it. Knowing when the shred events are is the easy part. Actually opening the boxes, making the decisions, and finishing the job? That’s the part that keeps getting bumped to next weekend.
If the thought of sitting with years of paperwork alone makes you want to close the closet door and pretend you didn’t see it — we can help.
At Joyful Spaces, we provide low-stress organizing sessions right here in Colorado Springs. We sit with you, talk through decisions together, and leave you with a filing system that keeps you organized and on top of papers.
No judgment, just results.
